Adams had been Secretary of State for 8 years under Monroe and , of course, he was the son of founding father, John Adams. In those days, Secretary of State was considered to be a stepping stone to the Presidency, so Adams was a natural candidate. As it turned out, times had changed, and Andrew Jackson from the frontier state of Tennessee won more electoral votes than Adams, but two others also received a considerable number , so nobody had a majority and according to the Constitution, the House of Representatives made the final choice and after much political manoeuvrings elected Adams.
If John Adams had won the election, it would have continued the Federalist Party's hold on the presidency. Additionally, his presidency might have resulted in a different path for the country, including potentially avoiding the highly contentious election of 1800 and the resulting rise of the Democratic-Republican Party.
