If we are speaking about the famous speech given by Martin Luther King Jr. on the mall lake in Washington DC, then I believe it was the speech people know as the "I Have a Dream" speech. In that speech, Luther's message was persuasive because it was meant to improve every person's status in America. The speech was not designed to point out how Afro Americans were treated. The speech was persuasive because of the phrase, (I'll paraphrase here) " That I dream of a day where the abilities of people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the character of their hearts and minds".

In this manner he was not pushing for an agenda only for Blacks, but for all people. Few could disagree with such a statement.
