Mary Todd Lincoln was from a slave-owning family in Kentucky. Her brothers fought for the Confederacy.

Mrs. Lincoln did not practice a wartime economy. She went on lavish shopping sprees to replace the shabby furnishings in the White House. President Lincoln was appalled by the way she spent money, but made no attempts to stop her.

Mostly, however, Mrs. Lincoln was hard to get along with. She was very outspoken. If she disliked someone, she didn't hesitate to let them know. She had wild mood swings. Not long before Lincoln's death, he took his family on a trip. Mrs. Lincoln was incensed because another woman, young and pretty, was riding a horse next to the President. She jumped out of her carriage, screaming such abuse that the young woman burst into tears.
