Antietam (Sharpsburg), September 17th 1862. It was Lee's first big defeat, and the first time that he had to fight on a ground that was not chosen by him.

Lee's first invasion of the north was in 1862 in Maryland and culminated in the Battle of Sharpsburg, also known as Antietam, on September 17, 1862. His second invasion which also saw his army still farther north was in Pennsylvania and ended with the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863. Lee met with defeat on both occasions.

A set of Lee's orders that a Confederate officer had accidentally dropped in the field. They showed that Lee's divisions were widely separated, and that McClellan could destroy them piecemeal.
