Bramante's design for the scaffolding in the Sistine Chapel meant there would be holes left in the ceiling once Michelangelo had finished painting it, and there would be no way to cover the holes after the scaffolding was removed, so Michelangelo took it upon himself to design the scaffolding for the project.
