He started the revolt that eventually became the Mexican War of Independence (1810 - 1821) against Spain. Hidalgo, however, didn't live enough to see the fruits of his efforts: he was captured and executed in July of 1811. Other "insurgents" saw him as a martyr, and continued with the war effort.
