Millard Fuller was dismissed from Habitat for Humanity in 2005 due to conflicts with the board of directors and issues related to his management style. Disagreements about the organization's direction and governance contributed to tensions, ultimately leading to his departure. Fuller's firing highlighted challenges in balancing visionary leadership with organizational structure. Despite the separation, his legacy in affordable housing remains significant.

Habitat grew out of the dedication of two visionary men: the late Clarence Jordan, founder of Koinonia Farm, a cooperative community; and Millard Fuller, a young millionaire who decided to give away his fortune and spend his life in Christian service. Together they recognized the desperate need for decent housing among the poor of southwestern Georgia and envisioned the partnership that became Habitat for Humanity International. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat has grown rapidly and now includes more than 1400 U.S. affiliates in Habitat USA and over 100 projects in 30 other countries sponsored by Habitat International. Over 100,000 Habitat houses have been built. Among Habitat's many volunteers and supporters is former President Jimmy Carter. Local organizing efforts began with a few individuals in December 1990. In December 1991, Habitat for Humanity of Champaign and Piatt Counties (HHCPC) became an official affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.

President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn helped a lot with the service and Jimmy can often be seen at Habitat building sites, sleeves rolled up and jeans dusty as he is, hammering away and--likely with his other workers-- completing at least the frame before the sun goes down.
