Mohammed returned to Mecca voluntarily. The first time, in March 629, it was to perform the umrah (lesser pilgrimage).

In January 630 Mohammed brought an army of ten thousand to conquer Mecca. In the end, there was very little actual fighting, because the Meccan leader, Abu Sufyan, surrendered before the army arrived. When the Muslims entered the city, they destroyed the idols in the Kaaba. A few months later, they demanded that the pagans convert, flee or die. Therefore Mecca was brought under Muslim rule.

Yes, he returned to Mecca (or Makkah) in year 632 AD to remove the Idols around the Kaaba, to save the tortured Muslims who are still in Mecca, and to secure the safe Hajj for Muslims.
