Our beloved prophet was considered very important in lineage of prophethood because of many reasons. I don't remember all the reasons but here are some

1) Prophet Muhammad swah was the last seal to prophethood which means that after him there would be no prophets. Which also means that the followers of Islam also called "Ummet e Wasat" have the responsiblity to lead mankind till the day of judgment.

2) Prophet Muhammad swah is the leader of all prophets and all humans. In the day of judgment he will ask Allah to begin the judgment and then Allah will start the judgment.

3) For very long period of time prophethood was given to "Bani Israel" i.e. family of Israel (Yakub ale salam was also called Israel and his lineage bani Israel). That tread ended with Isaa Ale Salam (called Jesus Christ by Christians). When Prophet Muhammad swah became prophet it meant that Allah has give the leadership to Prophet Muhammad swah and afterwords to his ummat.

You will appreciate this part only if you can understand lineage starting from Ibrahim Ale Salam.

4) The revelation brough to Prophet Muhammad swah by Allah is in form of Quran. Allah promised to preserve Quran till the day of judgment. All other Allah's book i.e. Toraj, Jabur and Injeel have either vanished or distored.

...there are many more but I am sorry but I don't remember them all.

By Allah I am not saying anything on my own. this is all in Hadith or Quran or both.

Who is the most important prophets?

All prophets when called of God are as important as each other. Though some may hold other offices such as Peter who was the head of the church after Christ died. All are prophets seers and revelators and there is not one above another. Some sciptorians may say that so and so was the most important because of what they spoke of or what we read of them having said. All however hold the same priesthood and the same authority, that of High Priest. As an after thought a Seer is greater than a Prophet in terms of responsibility.
