In 1819, Washington Irving published a short story called "Rip Van Winkle," in which the character of Rip Van Winkle goes off into the mountains and falls asleep for twenty years in turn missing the American Revolution and all of the changes it brought to society as he knew it.
North Carolinians were beginning to feel that time was passing their state by just as it had Rip Van Winkle. A lot of people considered the state's economy to be asleep while neighboring states were bustling with production and trade.
Promoters of the North Carolina Railroad considered it a duty to do so, and to remain in Rip-Van-Winkle condition was considered "evil." Compared to Virginia and South Carolina, North Carolina played, at best, a minor role in regional trade. Many Tar Heels, as a result, emigrated to enjoy a higher standard of living.
