If you mean Elizabeth I, her father listed her, along with her sister, in the succession. Both Edward and Mary died without children, so Elizabeth was next in line. Elizabeth II became Queen because her uncle, Edward VII, abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson, leaving his brother who became George VII to inherit the throne. Elizabeth followed her father at his death.

Queen Victoria ascended the throne at age 18, upon William IV's death in 1837. Queen Victoria was the daughter of the only daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent, who died shortly after her birth. The three uncles who were ahead of her in succession, had no legitimate children who survived.

She was crowned because she was the next royal in line for the throne.

She was the granddaughter of George V and Queen Mary. Their eldest son (Elizabeth's Uncle) David became King Edward VII after the death of George V. He however decided to abdicate so he could marry Wallis Warfield Simpson, the thrice divorced American woman that he loved. After his abdication Elizabeth's father became King George VI. Because she was his eldest child and did not have any brothers when he died of cancer in 1952 she became Queen.

Answer Queen Elizabeth II inherited the thrones from her father, King George VI, in accordance with the laws of succession to the thrones of the Commonwealth realms.

Correction: Wallis Simpson was married three times, but only divorced twice. Her first marriage was to an aviator, Earl Winfield Spencer, who she divorced in 1927. Her second marriage was to English businessman, Ernest Simpson in 1928. They remained married until 1937. Her third and final marriage, only a month after her divorce from Simpson became final, was in June 1937 to England's King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne to marry her. They remained married for 35 years until death; his in 1972, hers in 1986.

Note: There have been several cases in English history in which the person who was next in line to the throne was not crowned, or in which a person was crowned who was not next in line to the throne. For example,

  • no king from the Conquest until 1272 was actually succeeded by the person who was next in line to the throne
  • in 1216 Louis VIII of France was crowned king of England in St Paul's Cathedral in London, though King John was still alive and Louis wasn't in the line of succession at all
  • Henry IV was crowned while Richard II was still alive, and he wasn't even next after Henry, his cousin Philippa was
  • Edward V was never crowned: he was deposed before his coronation could be organised (and later disappeared, presumably murdered)
  • William III and Mary II were crowned while James II was still alive, and also had a living son
  • Edward VIII was never crowned because he abdicated before his coronation could be arranged.

Thus we see that succeeding to the throne is not the same as being rightful heir, and that getting crowned is not the same as either.

Second answer Elizabeth II was crowned because she succeeded to the monarchy and lasted un-deposed long enough for a coronation ceremony to be organised and carried out. And because it was customary at the time in the UK to crown the monarch.
