Sandwich was a port town in Kent, the English county closest to the coast of France, and as such had a strategically important location. It was one of five such ports that were given special privileges by King Edward I of England, giving it great advantages in trade and taxation in exchange for supply of ships and sailors in time of war. These ports were known as the Cinque Ports, and they formed a league with other towns and cities to make use of their superior status.
