Sutter's Mill was the first place that gold was discovered in California. The discovery in 1848, was the beginning of what is called the California Gold Rush. It was important as it increased the population of California dramatically and that population was a mixture of not only Americans, but it brought new immigrants from many parts of the world.
Sutters mill was located above Sacramento in Columa California and it was run by a man named John Marshall who found gold in the traces. This find began the gold rush and within two years California was a state on September 9, 1850.

Sutter's fort is still standing and it never did "fall." No battles took place at the fort. It was built for people who came to CA to settle. Today, it is a state park and you can tour the fort.
