Tea as we know it (the leaves of the Camelia Sinensis) was not known in the West in the Middle Ages. In Europe and Britain they did make many soothing potions, sometimes called tisanes, from local herbs and leaves, some of which may have been sweetened, chiefly with honey, because sugar was not much used in Europe at that time.
