Taipei 101 officially became the tallest building in the world when it opened its doors on 31 December 2004. Standing at 509 meters (1,671 feet) tall, the structure surpassed the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the Willis Tower in Chicago, USA. Its elevators, capable of travelling at 16.83 m/s (60.6 km/h, 37.5 mph), also claimed the title of the world's fastest.
Taipei 101 will likely relinquish both titles to the Burj Dubai (United Arab Emirates) when that building opens in 2008. The Burj Dubai is expected to claim a number of other records as well (tallest free-standing structure, tallest land-based structure).
Taipei 101 will likely keep its most fun role, made famous by New Year's Eve celebrations broadcast around the globe: the world's largest fireworks platform.
