After the attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861, Virginia convened a special convention to decide whether to secede from the Union. On April 17, 1861, Virginia voted to secede, joining the Confederacy. This decision led to the establishment of significant military engagements within the state, including the First Battle of Bull Run, and it ultimately transformed Virginia into a central battleground for the Civil War. The secession also spurred other states in the region to align with the Confederacy.
