The WWE started as Capital Wrestling (CWC) in 1939 by "Jess" McMahon. The CWC joined the NWA in 1953. In 1963 Over a dispute with the then champ Buddy Rogers who lost the belt to another promotion, the CWC split with the NWA and created the WWWF and made Buddy Rogers its first champion. At this time the promotion was run by Vince McMahon Sr.

In 1979 the company was change to the WWF. In 1980 Vince McMahon Jr created Titan Sports and purchased CWC and started expanding beyond it's northeast territory.

in 2000 theWWF lost a lawsuit to the World Wildlife Fund (or World Wide Fund for Nature). Both used the initials WWF, and the World Wildlife Fund claims that the WWF violated a 1994 agreement limiting the use of the initials overseas . So the WWF became the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment).

The WWE also acquired the Promotional rivals WCW in 2001 and ECW in 2003. Then in 2005/2006 everything was relaunched as Smackdown, Raw and ECW.
