William M. Tweed was the Democratic boss that ran New York City. His most famous scandal came when New York City taxes were being raised to build a new court house. He had raised $11 million to build the court house. When in reality he only needed $3 million. He secretly pocketed the rest of the money. He was caught put on trail, convicted, arrested and put in jail for 2 weeks. He then escaped and fled to Canada where shortly after he was recaptured. By the time they put him back in jail, he died a few weeks later.
