Windows & was named so because it is the 7th version of windows. And I guess it was the lack of creativity from MS that they couldn't come up with a more decent name :)
yeah i m agree with second line..
but they are following version names after window NT , all windows either XP or vista all have version name.
Windows 7 is the 7th version of the Microsoft Windows NT Operating System.
XP was version 5, Vista was version 6. Previous to that Windows 2000 was version 5 and Windows NT 4.0 was version 4, which was preceded by Windows 3.1x, Windows 3, Windows 2.1x, Windows 2 and Windows 1, the original Microsoft Windows Operating System. Windows 95, 98, and ME were part of a different code base.
It's also shown from the build number, Windows 7 has builds from 7000 onwards.
At its core, Windows 7 is technically version 6.1, as you can see in this table:
Windows 2000 - Version 5.0
Windows XP - Version 5.1
Windows Vista - Version 6.0
Windows 7 - Version 6.1
The reason for this is that XP and 7 were, respectively, only minor updates to their previous versions. 2000 and Vista, on the other hand, were such massive updates that they warranted full new version numbers.
Windows 7 is a large improvement over Windows Vista due to it's poor performance and it's incompatibility with many programs. It is much faster and can run software that Vista previously couldn't. Microsoft created Windows 7 as the 'new Vista' per say, or how it should have been. As any other company, their main motive was to make money.
Microsoft named Windows 7 Windows 7 because of it's kernel version. Each OS has a different kernel and in the past Microsoft named their OS by year. I guess that they wanted a change, so started naming it by kernel version.
Windows 7 was created by Microsoft Corporation.
All versions of Windows to this day is created by Microsoft.
Microsoft DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7.
The company "Microsoft" created and developed the Windows 7 Operating System. No single person invented it. It was a common effort between the entirety of the company Microsoft.

Windows 7 was not "discovered", it was created, or designed - by a company called Microsoft - which is of course the same company that designed previous versions of Windows.
My guess would be the software was created before Windows 7, so it was never given the compatibility to run on the newer system
