The invasion of southern England was ordered in 43 BC by the emperor Claudius. He sent Aulus Plautius to Britannia with four legions. After the main campaign, Claudius went to Britannia with reinforcements and war elephants. He stayed there for only 16 days. In 78 the emperor Vespasian, who had participated in the first invasion and had taken over the southwest of England, ordered the governor of Britannia, Agricola, to invade northern England. Agricola pushed into Scotland, but the Romans then withdrew from there.
