In very brief, most cultures create creation myths to explain "why we are here," or "where we came from." The Gods, for the Greeks and the Romans as well, are anthropomorphized elements of nature. What this means, is that all natural elements (the wind, the ocean, the sun, the moon, et cetera) were identified as manifestations of supernatural powers that governed mankind. The Greeks were pantheists, which means that they had more than one divine figure or god(dess). There are many modern beliefs that are similar -- like the idea of "Fate" being something real yet not tangible or controllable. Or, the idea of "Mother Earth" being a living being that supports humanity. Or even "Father Time." Again, these are all examples of a concept or natural element to which we have ascribed human-like qualities, such as a human form, personality, or spirit or energy.
