They stole, and killed. Even back in them days murder was illegal as well as steeling. They didn't care about anyone but themselves. If they didn't have enough treasure or gold as they wanted, they would steel it off another ship.

It is not, being a pirate a long time ago meant that you would be doing hard work day in and day out with the sun beating down on you every second of the day, being drenched in salt from the sea water and being the target of illnesses and diseases like scurvy.
