1912 was sort of a fluke. Theodore Roosevelt failed to get the Republican nomination and decided to run against the Republican incumber, Taft. The two split the Republican votes and let Wilson sneak in. Together, Roosevelt and Taft had more than enough to win. In 1916, the election was close. The world was at war. but the the US stayed out of it. Labor liked Wilson's policies. There is something about an incumbent, I think. Wilson won California and that was enough.
