It was one of the three Union victories that came just in time to raise Northern morale enough to save Lincoln from being voted out at the General Election of 1864.

Navigable rivers from Rome, Georgia, North Alabama, and North Mississippi all led to Mobile. It was a short distance overland to carry freight from the Tennessee River to the Tombigbee River. Thus, the port of Mobile provided a port that could ship raw materials from almost all of the South east of the Mississippi. So, next to New Orleans, it was the most important port city on the Gulf Coast.

Farragut's victory at Mobile Bay was important for the following reasons:

1) The Confederate ironclad Tennessee was put out of combat and captured;

2) The roadstead of Mobile was definitively closed both as Confederate Naval Base and Harbour for Confederates' blockade runners;

3) Together with Sherman's seizing of Atlanta, the victory was a pivotal event which really helped Lincoln to regain the favour of the public opinion during his

electoral campaign for the second Nomination.
