This war was one of those that was over before it began, the treaty ending the war was signed two weeks BEFORE the major battle was fought! (Mail was slow in those days!)
Francis Scott Key wrote the Star-Spangled Banner after he was forced by British troops only to observe the attack at Fort Henry during the war of 1812. Key was inspired to write the poem after seeing an American flag still waving the dawn after the battle had ended.
Francis Scott Key spent the night during the Battle of Baltimore on a British warship. The British had burned the Nation's Capital City of Washington, DC. The nation was dispirited. Now the British Forces were attacking Baltimore, a major port city which could cut the nation in half. It was the most dangerous time during the war of 1812. He spent the night of the Battle watching cannons fire and rockets exploding in air. Every now and then a bomb would explode illuminating the large flag flying over the fort giving proof it was still there and the British had not captured it. When dawn came exhilaration filled him and he wrote a poem about his experience.
He had been sent out to a British ship to negotiate for the trade of prisoners with the British.
