Grant was the best choice for the Union army because his predecessors were terrible at it, and he was entirly successful as a lesser commander of the Union troops in capturing the Mississippi River. This gave President Lincoln enough confidence to put Grant in, which turned out to be a good decision.

What gave Union General US Grant a good degree of confidence as the Battle of Chattanooga unfolded?

After the Union disaster at the Battle of Chickamauga, the US Department of War gave US Grant the authority to retake Chattanooga from the Confederates. Crucial there was the replacement of General Rosencrans with General Thomas as commander of the Army of the Cumberland. US Grant had a hand in this change change and thereby increased his confidence in a Union victory.

Who led the union soldiers at the battle of Appomattox?

Good question. The battle was won by the Army of the Potomac, commanded by General George Meade. It was accompanied by the Union General-in-Chief, U.S. Grant, travelling in a mobile HQ. The issue of which General technically won the battle is debatable. Some say that Meade, not Grant, should have taken Lee's surrender.

Why did congressmen criticize Grant and why did Lincoln like him?

Congressmen criticized Grant for his handling of Reconstruction policies, which they believed were too lenient towards the South. Grant's administration was also marred by several corruption scandals, which further fueled criticism. Lincoln, on the other hand, liked Grant because he saw him as a successful military general who could lead the Union to victory during the Civil War. Grant's military achievements appealed to Lincoln, and he believed Grant could effectively lead the Union army.

Who was the Union leader of the battle of Appomattox?

Good question. The army commander was General George Meade, and some peple thought he should have been the one to take Lee's surrender. However, the Union General-in-Chief, U.S. Grant, was travelling alongside the army in a mobile HQ, and it seemed to him that the surrender should be conducted between one General-in-Chief and another.

What disadvantages did the union army hane in the civil war?

How did Union General Sheridan aid the North in the final months of the US Civil War in the Eastern Theater?

With Union flanking assaults a total failure in the Eastern Theater of the US Civil War, an unlikely Union hero general came to the aid of US Grant. Sheridan was able to mount a good deal of flanking success by using his cavalry to spearhead flanking maneuvers by Grant's infantry. The use of the cavalry prolonged the ability of Lee's forces to move to a most desirable position in anticipation of Union army assaults.

Why was Ulysses S. Grant qualified to lead the army?

While George McClellan (First commander of the Army of the Potomac) was taking a long time to attack Robert E. Lee and the confederates Grant was making much progress with his army in the west. Winning battles such as The Battle of Shiloh and capturing Forts Henry and Donelson. Lincoln would later relieve McClellan of his duties and replace him with Ambrose Burnside and make Grant head of all Union armies. Then Grant would win the siege against Vicksburg and destroy Lee's army at Gettysburg. Grant would keep on attacking Lee at every chance he got and not until 1865 would Lee surrender at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia giving Grant and the rest of the Union a Civil War victory. IMPROVEMENT. Being out discussion that Grant's "global strategy" led the Union to win the Civil War, making him a hero, I would like to point out followings: - Ambrose Burnside was replaced by Joseph Hooker and the latter by George Meade to command the Army of the Potomac. - Grant was appointed General in Chief on March 9,1863 and didn't fight at Gettysburg. - Lee lost the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, but George Meade, the Union field Commander, couldn't manage to destroy his army. - Lee's surrender at Appomattox though pivotal, didn't put to an end the Civil War, which still lasted for more than a month.

Could African Americans serve in the union army?

Yes. There was an African American unit in the union army. They were still paid less than the white soldiers and had white officers. A good movie to watch on this is GLORY.
