Hydrogen gas was used in air balloons because it is much less dense than air and therefore rises, taking the balloon with it. it is unfortunately also very explosive so not used often anymore.

Which gas did Jacques Charles discover could be used as the source of hot air for hot air balloons envelope?

hydrogen

What are the gases used to fly balloons?

Two of the gases that are used to fly balloons are Hydrogen and Helium. Helium is the preferred gas because Hydrogen is very explosive. The Hindenburg disaster was caused by the ignition of the Hydrogen gas that filled it.

What is the gas used in hot air balloon?

Air - a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and other gases. When heated, air becomes less dense and so it will float in cooler (= more dense) air, giving the balloon its lift.Airships and blimps are different to hot air balloons in that they gain lift from an envelope (the balloon) filled with a gas that is lighter than air. In the past, this was hydrogen but use of this gas was stopped due to its extremely flammable nature and helium is now used instead.Used gasses in balloons: helium, hot air, hydrogen.

Why is hydrogen no longer used in air balloons?

For small balloons like individuals often have for recreational use, hot air is much easier to control than either hydrogen or helium. For the occasional blimp, or long distance balloon trip, Helium, while somewhat heavier than Hydrogen, has proven to be far safer. The Hindenburg has proven the inherent dangers of using Hydrogen Gas in blimps. While, in theory, pure hydrogen is not explosive without the presence of oxygen, any rupture in the thin material separating hydrogen from the air atmosphere can prove to be deadly.

Can helium be used in hot air balloons?

YES!!! However, there is no need to heat the helium. It is a light gas. and it is an inert gas.

Which gas is used to fill the balloons?

Hydrogen, until the Hindenburg, then everyone realized that "Hey, Hydrogen isn't that safe to use!"Hot air balloons, you mean?? Just air that is hot.Actual hand balloons and such? Helium or again, just air. Helium floats better because it is lighter than the surrounding air around it. Helium and air are still used in both.

Is helium only used in balloons and air ships?

Helium is the most used gas for balloons; sometimes hot air and rarely hydrogen.

Why is helium used in hot-air balloons when hydrogen is the lighter gas?

heliums ligther

Which other gas instead of hydrogen can be used for air balloons?

Helium - it's less reactive.

Why is hydrogen gas is not used in balloons?

Hydrogen is too flammable

What element is used more in making balloons?

Helium is a gas used to inflate lighter than air balloons.

Which kind of gas are in balloons?

hydrogen, helium, hot air

Which gas did Jacques Charles discover could be used as the source of hot air for hot air balloons envelope?

hydrogen

What is used as lifting gas in balloons?

Hydrogen gas makes the ballon lighter than air therefore it drifts upwards

What is a very light gas found in some balloons?

Helium is used in blimps and balloons. It is the second lightest element to hydrogen, which is not used because it is highly flammable.

How do you know hydrogen gas is lighter than air?

Balloons filled with it float in air

Why isn't hydrogen gas used any more in air balloons?

Because it is incredibly flammable. Look up "Hindenburg".
