Slavery began before the United States even existed. It began as soon as man found out he could dominate over other men and make them do his bidding.
Slavery was a debate because prior to the musings of the natural rights philosophers (John Locke, Hobbes...) people did not believe it was morally wrong to own another human being. But after people began questioning their social status, and writers began to explore the concept of equality...slavery began to be questioned as well.
The first slave arrived in 1619 well before the revolution and the constitution, so there was no president when American slavery began.
There were black groups that formed in America before slavery began. In fact, Anthony Johnson, a black man himself, was one of the first American slave owners.
The group of anti-slavery people in the North were called abolitionists. This was a minority group even though most people in the North did not approve of slavery. Nevertheless, a war to end slavery was not a real threat until the US Civil War. The American movement to abolish slavery in the US dates back before the 19th century began. It grew stronger as time passed. With that said, it is important to note that although President Lincoln hated slavery, he never called himself an abolitionist.
