Washington was the first President of the United States under the new Constitution. During the Revolutionary War, the colonies had overthrown their king and used to govern themselves with only a loose federation and no federal executive like a king or president. Therefore, Washington had to establish the office of President , demonstrate what it was and how he could use his powers to govern the nation.
