The framers of the United States Constitution divided the powers of the government in order to avoid their newly formed country from turning into a Dictatorship, as they were previously in. By separating the powers, the government made the country less likely to have one group overruling the others. They also made sure of that by making a system of checks and balances, which allowed the powers tocheck and balance the other groups.
