What were the Americans military strengths and weaknesses upon entering the Revolutionary War?

Well.... First off, there was no "America" in the sense of an independent country. That's why it's often called the War for American Independence. Thus, there was no "American Military". Secondly, while the American Colonies all had independent militias, any formal military organization belonged to the British. In this context, American militias consisted of small groups of ordinary citizens, without any formal training (at best, they very occasionally got together and practiced, but that really doesn't constitute what military drill was, even for that time). Thus, at the beginning of the War, the situation was that the American side had what we would now recognize as a purely guerrilla force. While they had modern (for the time) weaponry, there was little formal organization and the Americans did NOT engage in anything like what would be considered "typical" combat. And, the American Militias did not contain any cavalry, which was a huge disadvantage. After about a year into the conflict, the American side finally managed to field a standard military force.

Is colonial militia considered social?

Coolonial Militia definitely was not a social entity. However, today many people view the local militias of the 1700s as quasi-military, not full military. Men could pay a fee for some other man to go in his place, and many militias often just marched from one location to another without entering any battles.
