Think about it. They were in an area where you couldn't really see them (aside from the occasional rifle or Maxim machine gun sticking up), but they had a perfect view of you. But, if you were to get into the trench with your flamethrower, you could easily clear hundreds of yards for your platoon. Did this help?

The armies would lose the majority of their soldiers during these fights. It was difficult because they were in these trenches for days on end and they would often get flooded with water which would get into their shoes and cause oozing sores. They didn't really have any supplies on the way either They had not much food or fresh clothes, (not even underwear!) and it was sort of like waiting in line to get shot.

Rats and cockroaches were the mens only companions. Everything else was killed. Trees, grass, and plants were nowhere in sight. Mud was almost always engulping the trenches. Men would sleep in it. There are many other negatives these are just a few of the main ones.
