As always, in the pop industry, the opportunities are limited. The Beatles struggled because they were from a provincial city (Liverpool); most the UK music industry was based in London. They were also very "different" from other acts of the time in that they didn't have a star with backing band format. Finally, although they were a good live act, their "demo" recordings weren't that good - their manager advised them to record "standards" rather than original work, and the Beatles sounded quite nervous as they recorded.
