During the Civil War generals were still using the Napoleon style of combat which consisted of lining up soldiers in rows. The opposing sides were marched within fairly close range before they began firing. When this style of combat was first developed the close range was necessary due to the poor range of guns. By the time of the American civil war the range and accuracy of guns had vastly improved making the tradition of lining solders at close range to fire at one another an incredibly deadly practice.
