When Pedro I [April 19, 1320-January 18, 1367] became King of Portugal in 1357, he had the body of Inês Pérez de Castro [1325-January 7, 1355] exhumed and ordered the court to swear allegiance to her as Queen of Portugal. Pedro claimed that Inês was lawfully the Queen of Portugal because he secretly had married her after the death of his wife, Constance of Castile in 1345. They were married secretly because of opposition from Pedro's father, King Afonso IV [February 8, 1291-May 28, 1357]. Ultimately King Afonso IV arranged for Inês' murder at the Monastery of Santa Clara [Mosteiro de Santa Clara] in Coimbra.
