John Brown was famous, or infamous for the families whose sons were killed by his ill conceived plot to start a slave rebellion in Virginia. He developed a conspiracy to take over the Federal arsenal in Harper's Ferry, Virginia.
He had financial support from wealthy and radical anti slavery abolitionists in New England and even invited Afro American scholar Frederick Douglas to join his revolution.
Under a assumed name he bought a farm in Virginia as his base of operations for his plot. About 20 men joined the conspiracy. They were successful in taking over the Federal arsenal and Brown sent his men out into the Virginia countryside to convince slaves to revolt against their "owners".
No one joined the revolt. He and his friends were surrounded at the Federal arsenal. Finally, Federal troops under the command of Robert E. Lee captured Brown, date was 1859. He was tried for treason and executed in December of 1859.
