Nationalism was the most important cause of ww1 this is because the war was made to show which country was the best. ''Austria was afraid of it's empire breaking up, Which would lead it to losing it's power'' Therefore, it is clear that nationalism was the most important cause of ww1 as the countries wouldn't of gone to war if they did not want to show that they were the best. Nationalism is more important than imperialism (Next paragraph) because none of this would've occurred if nationalism wasn't there.
It was one of the 4 major reasons of war, the other three are Alliances, Militarism, Nationalism.

Nationalism Militarism
Many reasons contributed to the start of World War 1. These include the assassination if the archduke of Austria-Hungary Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. Empires and alliances were another factor along with militarism, nationalism, and crises.
Nationalism was important because it was the reason why World War 1 started. If the Serb terrorists had not killed Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand Austria would have never declared war on Serbia. The reason why the Serb terrorists who were members of the Black Hand killed Franz Ferdinand was because they did not like an Austrian ruler ruling a Serb country thus making an act of nationalism. Nationalism did play an important role in the cold war. There are certain individuals who offered to work as spies for their countries.
Nationalism was a key factor in the Balkan crisis.The conflict between Serbia and Austria -Hungary was founded on the need of Serbs of Austria-Hungary . Russia, the mother of all slavs, intervened for Serbia while Germany , being in an alliance with Austria-Hungary supported them. This caused war between the two alliances.
