The main reason of the construction of the Panama Canal was to reduce the overall voyage tome for ships to to cross from one ocean to another. As Panama is (relatively) narrower, it was deemed an ideal place. Also because Panama has existing bodies of water- in particular Lake Gutan- the canal would be able.to pass right through it and thus reducing the workload
They chose a spot that was almost the narrowest point of Panama, for cost reasons. Also, that spot included a couple of very large lakes that would not have to be excavated, again saving money, and speeding up the operation.
Since Panama wished to be an independent country from Columbia, it is only logical that the Panamanians would return the favor to the Americans if they chose to "assist" them. This came in the form of a ten mile strip of land that is now known as the Panama Canal.
Take a look at a map. Would you rather dig a ditch a couple hundred miles long or one a couple thousand miles long? The isthmus of Panama is the narrowest point in the American continents.
It was the most narrow point in the area to be able to connect the two oceans.
