It was Carole King's comment on the peculiarities of suburban life and the competitive nature within. It was also written as a vehicle for The Monkees (the first group to record the song) to make use of a guitar riff interlocked with bass, developed by producer Chip Douglas, because he was looking for the next big guitar riff along the lines of "Day Tripper" and "Last Train To Clarksville".
