Most pneumonia occurs when a breakdown in your body's natural defenses allows germs to invade and multiply within your lungs. To destroy the attacking organisms, white blood cells rapidly accumulate. Along with bacteria and fungi, they fill the air sacs within your lungs (alveoli)

Pneumonia refers to inflammation of the lungs. "Pneumon" in Latin means lungs. The suffix "-ia" means pathological condition. In common English, pneumonia can be translated as "a pathological condition of the lungs."

A more technically correct term would be pneumonitis, because the suffix "-itis" means inflammation, but for some unknown reason it has long been called pneumonia.
