∙ 15y agoPneumonia refers to inflammation of the lungs. "Pneumon" in Latin means lungs. The suffix "-ia" means pathological condition. In common English, pneumonia can be translated as "a pathological condition of the lungs."
A more technically correct term would be pneumonitis, because the suffix "-itis" means inflammation, but for some unknown reason it has long been called pneumonia.
