That is almost a correct description. Ptolemy's model was not incorrect, because it predicted the positions of the planets quite accurately. So accurately that no-one thought to question it for over a thousand years.
But in the end people decided to try for a more accurate model, and after a couple of attempts a model came up that is now accepted everwhere, which was devised by Johannes Kepler and published in 1609. It was accepted after the discovery of the law of gravity and the laws of motion.
Before that there were some big arguments about which was the right model, and especially about whether the Earth is at the centre, or the Sun.
Kepler's model has the Sun at the centre and this is now accepted because the later discoveries showed that the Sun is far more massive than the planets, so it sits at the centre while all the planets orbit round it.
This is because he explained the sun's role in the universe!

Galileo and Copernicus were two of the scientists to disprove Ptolemy's geocentric theory of the universe. The Ptolemaic theory stated that the center was earth.
Shortly before Copernicus died he figured that the Earth was notthecenter of things, but the Sun was. This theory is still used today. He worked out this this theory from detailed observations of the orbit of Mars.
Ptolemy put the Earth at the center of his model of the universe , and said that the Sun , the moons , the planets ,the asteroids , comets , and meteors orbit the Earth and the Earth was the center of the universe.

Ptolemy's theory was incorrect because he believed the Earth was at the center of the universe and that the other planets and the Sun revolved around it. However, he was later corrected by, I believe, Copernicus (Ca-per-ni-kus) who stated the Sun was in the center of the universe and that the planets, including Earth, revolved around it.

If you mean what scientist created the heliocentric theory, it was Nicolaus Copernicus. Based on astronomical observations, he determined that the Ptolemaic geocentric theory was incorrect, and replaced it with his own heliocentric theory, which placed the sun at the center of the universe, and had planets orbiting the sun.
According to Kepler's Universe theory, the universe was born in 4977 BC.
The steady-state universe theory
Friedmann Universe Theory was created in 1922.
