It was the foundation of everyday life in the middle ages. The Catholic church set the standards and rules of society. They taught that man was born in sin and the only way to get to heaven was to go through them. Since people couldn't read or write they depended on the church to teach them the right way to live and to tell them what The Bible said. This made the church very powerful and the church became part of the government as well. It told kings what to do and how to do it. The church became very wealthy and powerful which made religion more important.

Religion gave people a reason to live. It meant they had something to do all the time instead of solid working all day, every day. Religion was the quest for answers that had not been proved, accepted, or agreed upon by the majority. People wanted to know what to do under certain circumstances when they were not told explicitly. People fell to the concept of religion in order to believe in something that could be expressed in a traditional manner. People wanted to spread their or another's concept, people wanted meaning to everything that existed. Religion was a way of life and people chose to believe it for inner motivation. Religion was very unique and that's what created so many conflicts.
