From a technology perspective it was mainly to prove that humans could launch something into orbit, and build it well enough to keep functioning up there.

From a politicial perspective it was a part of the power struggle between Russia/Soviet Union and the US, to try to determine who was the smartest/strongest.

The USSR (Russia) had obtained German rocket technology after World War II, as had the US. The two countries had teams of scientists working to develop missiles and missile defenses in the Cold War. The initial goal of satellites was to spy on other countries from space. Early satellites like Sputnik (launched in 1957 by the USSR) would obtain the information that would be needed to allow later satellites, and eventually humans, to travel and function in space.
