The Battle of Bull Run July 21st 1861 (also referred to as the Battle of Manassas) was the first real battle of the civil war. There was a battle previous, The battle of Fort Sumter, but no one died so it wasn't anything more than symbolic. The battle of Bull Run was actually quite brutal. here are the statistics.
Union casualties were 460 killed, 1,124 wounded, and 1,312 missing or captured; Confederate casualties were 387 killed, 1,582 wounded, and 13 missing
the real surprise was the fact that the union (who thought they were vastly superior and supplied) had lost the first battle of the war. Things would only really go down hill for the union until Gettysburg where Lee would begin to get pushed back south.
