The HMS Minden was a 74-gun Ganges-class Royal Navy warship built in Bombay Dockyard, India, and launched on 19th July 1810. She was named after the German town of Minden, which saw the Battle of Minden in 1759 during the Seven Years War, which saw a decisive victory of British and Prussian forces over France.
Her first action was in February 1811, when she sailed from India to take part in the capture of the Far Eastern island of Java from the Dutch. The conflict lasted seven months until the surrender of combined Dutch and French forces in September- the Minden then sailed for the UK and served as an escort vessel for naval convoys travelling to the West Indies, the Americas and South Africa.
She is probably most famous for her role during the American War of Independence, when she saw action in 1812 in Chesapeake Bay. It is said that Francis Scott Key was aboard her when he wrote the poem 'The Defence of Fort McHenry', which became the lyrics for America's national anthem 'The Star-Spangled Banner' after the US gained Independence.
Following the USA's cessation from the British Empire, Minden took part in the naval attack on Algiers in late August 1816, a combined US-British operation designed to stop the Dey of Algiers from taking European Christians as slaves. The attack was partially succesful, as the Dey freed over 3,000 European prisoners, but later resumed his practices.
Between 1819 and '39 she saw service in the East Indies, the River Tagus in Spain and Portugal, and Malta. Then on 22nd July 1841, a catastrophic typhoon destroyed the British Royal Naval Hospital in Hong Kong, and the Minden was posted there to serve as a hospital ship, a role she continued until 1846 when she was replaced by HMS Alligator. She then remained anchored in Hong Kong Harbour serving as a stores ship, until being broken up for scrap in 1861.
In her memory, two streets in Hong Kong were named after her- Minden Row and Minden Avenue, located behind Signal Hill in the Kowloon district.
Francis Scott Key was aboard HMS Minden on his travel to and from the British fleet off Baltimore. After arranging on the flagship HMS Tonnant for the release of an arrested friend, Dr. William Beanes, he was taken by HMS Surprise back to HMS Minden and released after the attack on Fort McHenry was concluded.
