The grizzly bear was chosen as a symbol because in the 1800’s the population of bears covered California and the red band on the bottom of the flag was added from the slip of a young girl. The flag declared California free of Mexican rule. When California became a state in 1850 the Bear Flag was kept and added to with other symbols that represent California.
