Clemenceau wanted to punish Germany serverly because george clemenceau was the leader of France at the treaty of Versailles, and most of the war was fought in France, leaving an area the size of Wales destroyed.also Clemenceau was fuming at what he was left with so wanted Germany to suffer as much as possible to get his own back on Germany.

France wanted it to be harsh so Germany would be in too crippled a position to ever do anything like they did in WW1. Sadly, it did not and some even consider that it was one of the causes that led to WW2

He wanted the treaty of Versaille to punish Germany serverly because of the damage France had had to endure during WW1 caused by them. Using the treaty of Versaille he wanted to 'cripple' them so they would no longer be a threat to France and invade (he had already seen 2 invasions from the Germans in his life time). The pressure from the french public also encouraged him to want Germany punished severly as like him they had been devastated by the war which left 750,000 homes destroyed and 1.5 million dead. His plan to weaken Germany included:

Repartions (Weaken them economically)

Splitting Germany into smaller states

Dismantle Army (Weaken their security)
