Originally, UNIFIL was created by the Security Council in March 1978 to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, restore international peace and security and assist the Lebanese Government in restoring its effective authority in the area. The original mandate had to be adjusted twice, due to the developments in 1982 (Israeli involvement in the Lebanese Civil War) and 2000 (Israeli military withdrawal from South Lebanon).
Following the Israel-Hezbollah War of 2006, the Council enhanced the Force and decided that in addition to the original mandate, it would, among other things, monitor the cessation of hostilities; accompany and support the Lebanese armed forces as they deploy throughout the south of Lebanon; and extend its assistance to help ensure humanitarian access to civilian populations and the voluntary and safe return of displaced persons.

The Lebanese borders were set by France during the early division of the Mandate for Syria, at which point, Lebanon was split off from the other Syrian regions. Currently, the Lebanese borders are defended by the United Nations (UNIFIL) which has recognized the Lebanese-Israeli border as being the "Blue Line" south of the Litani River.
There have been 258 fatalities of UNIFIL personnel to date. In most cases where statistics are listed, the parties responsible aren't listed or remain unknown.
Southern Lebanon does not refer to a specific region and therefore is not an exact size. When most people refer to "southern Lebanon" they are referring to the area north of the Israeli border and south of the Litani River where UNIFIL is stationed (see map in the Related Links below). This area is roughly 420 sq. mi. or 1090 sq. km.
