It abolished slavery in the United States.
There are many cons of the Progressive Movement within the United States. Many people feel these cons include higher abortion rates, higher immigration numbers, limited personal liberties, and more government intrusion in business affairs.
In the US we have only two parties, but many more 'interests'. The Democratic Party traditionally served liberals, progressives, labor, consumerism, etc. etc. The Republican Party served conservatives, capitalists, libertarians, etc. Both parties at different times served isolationists, racists, reactionaries, expansionists, imperialists, etc. When one of these interest groups feels its party doesn't serve its needs, they will sometimes attempt to form their own parties. The Progressive Party, the Free Soilers, the Know Nothings, the 'American Independent Party' (of George Wallace) are examples of this. In the case of the Progressive Party, Teddy Roosevelt was a very progressive president in the Republican Party. In fact his time in office was called 'The Progressive Era'. Roosevelt endorsed the next American president, Taft, thinking Taft would carry on TR's progressive agenda. When he didn't, Roosevelt got angry and decided to run against him as a third party candidate. His party is called the Bull Moose Party but that's a nickname, it was actually the Progressive Party.

The Progressive Movement in the United States was not started by one person or one group. The progressive ideas and ideals that were expressed in the early years of the 20th century go back to the ideas expressed by Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence. The Progressive Movement inherited ideas and reforms from such groups as the Mugwumps, the groups leading the Social Gospel movement, the women's movement which goes back to the 19th century, Populism, and even some socialistic ideas put forth in the late 19th century. Basically, the progressives saw ills in society at all levels of government--local, state, and national. They attempted to correct these evils and ills in various ways. The thing that made the Progressive Movement more successful than previous groups attempting reform was that the progressivies appealed to a wide variety of people and ideas. They included members of most political parties as well as the poor, middle, and upper classes of society. There were progressive businessmen, progressive politicians, and progressive individuals and groups. Another factor in the success of the movement was that there were three progressive presidents who pushed the ideals of the movement, and leading senators and representatives who helped create the public support for the movement's reforms. I received the following information on Progressive Life Insurance Company from the Georgia Insurance Commissioner's Office: In 1959, Progressive merged with and into Coastal States Life Insurance Company. Then all active and in force policies issued or assumed by Coastal States Life Insurance Company prior to 1989 were sold to either the Victory Life Insurance Company or the Capital Security Life Insurance Company. Victory Life Insurance Company was placed into liquidation and their business was assumed by the United Fidelity Life Insurance Company (816-391-2000). Effective 11/30/1998 the Capital Security Life Insurance Company merged into the Monumental Life Insurance Company (319-355-8511). Thank you. Consumer Services Division.
