During the Late Period some statues were produced that represented gods and these were sometimes shown wearing an ankh amulet - but for most of Egyptian history gods and kings were shown holding an ankh, not wearing one. This amulet signified life, particularly life after death in the Egyptian underworld.

The idea of wearing an ankh on a necklace first became commonplace in Europe during the 1960s, led by the hippy movement - which no connection at all with ancient Egypt.
